During the mating season, the face and genitalia of males redden and the tail will stand erect. In addition, females' faces and anogenital regions turn scarlet.
I'm mostly proud of that photo, because what you see is almost the "as shot" photo.
I was lucky enough to have this amazing composition in front of my lens: the way the animal stood still long enough for my shot. the sunlight on the Japanese Macaque's red face increased its "make-up"; I only worked slightly on the shadows to increase the focus on the face.
